Rural water supplies WP2P digital and SMS Lite

A simple but innovative solution for controlling small rural water supplies using QTech devices.

Our customer needed a low-cost control system for two reservoirs. The system would start/stop the pumps and send alerts to operators for reservoir low levels or communications fails. The reservoirs are in a rural area with many hills and large trees, however there is cell coverage throughout.

The solution to the customers’ requirement included two pairs of Wireless Point to Points connected to a 4G SMS Lite.

Due to the simplicity of WP2Ps and SMS Lites, this solution provided the customer a virtual “plug-and-play” solution as no additional software or programming is required.

Wireless Point to Points (WP2P) are a wireless remote-control solution with three switched inputs & three relay outputs. WP2Ps are used in pairs and due to the simplicity of the design, operating an input switch at one end will trigger the output relay at the other end and vice versa. This cost-effective system has low power consumption, typically only ~6mA, does not require any programming and features a digital radio using 900MHz Digital Modulation.

The 4G SMS Lite provides cellular remote control. It uses text messages to provide up to eight people with status conditions, notifications and control options for its four switched inputs and two relay outputs. It is operational within minutes, with the minimum configuration requirement being the registering of a single cellular number to the SMS Lite. All configuration is done by sending text messages. You can check the status of the devices, receive notifications and manually control the outputs of the SMS Lite from your cell phone.

The customer configured the system to send out SMS messages in case of low water levels in the reservoirs or from communications fails between the reservoirs and pump shed.

A wireless repeater was also required as there is no clear line of sight from reservoir 2 to the pump shed. Wireless repeaters are easily added to systems and provide an alternate communications channel. The repeaters can also be solar powered if mains power is not available.
