The DATRAN XL4 Plus RTU Archive Logging with XL4-Connect is now available.
If your DATRAN system loses contact with a remote RTU, for hours, days or longer, what happens to the data being logged at that site? Until now, the answer depended on how quickly you could get someone to the site before the local log rolled over and began overwriting old records.
With the release of the DATRAN XL4 Plus RTU and firmware V7.19, that window extends from days to months, and in upgraded configurations, over a year.
We recently released the new look XL4 Plus RTU, this latest version comes fitted with an Extended Flash memory chip, enabling the Archive Log in V7.19. This automatically backs up the RTU Log which extends retention from weeks to over a year at standard logging rates, or 65 days at the maximum 255 points.
V7.19 increases RTU Log capacity by 10× and raises the logged point limit from 35 to 255, aligning with expanded DWS monitoring requirements. At 35 points logged every minute, storage increases from 1.3 days to 21 days. When logging the full 255 points, capacity is approximately 3 days.
Introducing XL4-Connect – NEW APPLICATION
XL4-Connect is a new Windows application for field technicians that provides backup and emergency access to RTU log data when SCADA communications are impaired or unavailable.
By connecting a laptop to the RTU’s LAN, technicians can quickly retrieve data directly from the site. Retrieved log files can then be imported into the DATRAN SQL Historian using the DATRAN Database Import Utility. XL4-Connect complements existing collection methods, while routine data collection continues automatically via HDI over the telemetry link.
RTU Log or Archive Log
Retrieve either log over the LAN. This is significantly faster than serial download, and the practical way to pull the larger Archive Log.
Auto-resume
If an Archive Log download is interrupted, Resume picks up where it left off rather than starting again.
Built-in log viewer
Inspect a downloaded log immediately, with UTC and local time conversion and a light or dark theme.
Full or date-range download
Download the entire log, or request just a start-to-stop time range to collect only the records you are missing.
Log statistics at a glance
View capacity, occupancy, oldest and newest records, timespan, and how much has already uploaded to DATRAN.
Memory health tracking
Monitor bad-block count over time as an early indicator of memory wear in the field.

Upgrading and Licensing
The V7.18 improvements are available to existing customers via a firmware upgrade.
Archive Logging is a separately licensed feature that requires an XL4 Plus RTU fitted with the Extended Flash memory chip, V7.19 firmware, and a license with the Archive Log option enabled. New XL4 Plus units come pre-configured with all three.
